Pregunta: Me dijeron que un coleccionista tiene London After Midnigth y está esperando a que expiren los derechos para que pueda liberar el filme. ¿Es verdad?

Respuesta: Casi con seguridad que no. London After Midnight (1927), de Tod Browning, es el más famoso de los films perdidos, a causa de Forrest J. Ackerman, que a través de su revista de terror orientada a adolescentes la alabó a lo largo de los años, publicando estupendas fotos fijas. La realidad es que, aquellos que vieron la película a fines de los años '50, como William K. Everson o David Bradley, no la consideraron para nada una obra maestra, incluso inferior al propio remake que Browning hizo años después bajo el título de MARK OF THE VAMPIRE (1935), con Bela Lugosi. El más persistente rumor es que un coleccionista posee la película y que está esperando hasta la expiración de los derechos, en el 2002. Tal leyenda nació probablemente a principios de los '70, cuando una tienda de alquiler de películas de Nueva Inglaterra, denominada Cecil Miller, listó London After Midnight entre sus títulos "a estrenar", presumiblemente como un gag. Posteriores versiones de ese gag incluyen reseñas de la película en Internet Movie Database y una discusión del Día de los Inocentes acerca de su emisión en el canal de Turner. El supuesto coleccionista tendrá que seguir esperando, ya que las leyes de copyright cambiaron, y ahora la fecha en que London After Midnight pasará a dominio público será en el 2022.
